The issue of the ecological sustainability of Australian Cities is of increasing public concern. This concern is being reflected in the significant increase in the attention being paid to issues of global climate change. Average urban dwellings produce about eight tonnes of carbon dioxide per year through energy consumption. This demand has grown consistently over the past 30 years, and will continue to grow further. This can be reduced through more efficient energy use, product selection and influencing behavioural change.
